STARBURST'S STORY
Starburst came off the track in June 2005 and was awaiting adoption in a foster home.
In early October, Starburst awoke in the middle of the night in excruciating pain. No one knows exactly how, but he had broken his neck.
Due to the pain Starburst was in, it was difficult to get a clear x-ray. At first it was feared that he had broken his first vertebra, which supports the head. A CAT scan at Michigan Vet Specialists' facility revealed that Starburst's neck was broken between the first and second vertebra-- a much better diagnosis, as this condition could be fixed surgicaly with four screws.
To everyone's great relief, Starburst came through surgery successfully. His life should practically return to normal following a 8 - 12 week period of confinement, which he will be spending with his new adopted family: John, Linda and Jason Foster. When the Fosters' vet learned of Starburst's ordeal, he said that a human with a similar break would have been paralyzed. He also said there was a "one in a million chance that Starburst survived"!
Unfortunately, Starburst's amazing recovery hasn't come cheap: his vet bills have cost Michigan Greyhound Connection over $8,600. Please give what you can to help MGC cover Starburst's medical expenses so that we can continue to aid our greyhound friends in need.

NOVEMBER 2005 UPDATE! His family reports: "He's
looking good without the cast, although he does hold his head awkwardly at
times which is to be expected. The biggest challenge is he wants to play
and go for walks all the time, and we have to keep him calmed down a bit
which isn't easy, and separated from the rest so no rough-housing. Can't
wait till December when we see Dr. Jackson and hopefully get the okay to
let him do what he wants."
MARCH 2006 UPDATE!
His family says, "Starburst's surgeon has given the okay for him to
resume life as a "normal" greyhound -- whatever that is :) He is now
allowed to play gently and carefully with the rest of the group, and is
loving every minute of it."
